Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15 incorporates novel "state of the art" query processing technology capable of coping with diverse workloads from OLTP to DSS.

Pre ASE15, curious users would use trace 302/310/317 to peek inside the query processor. However, with ASE 15 comes a plethora of new diagnostics output all of which have been integrated into Sybase Central/DBISQL framework.

This presentation will demonstrate how advanced ASE 15.0.2 diagnostics are fed-back to the user via both DBISQL and isql clients. In short, what has happened to 302/310/317 output in ASE15. After this presentations, users will be able to interpret and understand:

  - query plans
  - query costs
  - were stats missing?
  - obtain Abstract Plans for "free"
  - collect optdiag outputs/database schema via a GUI
  - how to gather information if you need to log a support call.

Using ASE New Features to Automate Database Monitoring and Repair

The Sybase ASE data encryption solution in 15.0 introduced native, easy-to-administer column encryption with no application changes. In an upcoming release, ASE will take the final leap and add the ability to protect sensitive data from disclosure to the DBA. Only the business users responsible for the data will be able to see and process confidential information. This talk presents other improvements that maintain and improve legacy application compatibility and enable the DBA to further secure data from internal and external threats with no administrative overhead.

Archive Database Access

ASE 12.5.4 has a new infrastructure that enables a non tape archive device to be represented as a normal database. The load of an archive database is much faster than the traditional load of a normal database due to the fact that Backup Server does not need to copy pages. The storage for an archive database is mainly the dump itself and only a minimal amount of traditional disk space is needed when ASE allocates and modifies pages as part of recovery. An archive database can be used for a variety of operations including object-level restore, database consistency checking and load sequence verification.

Best Practices in Using SAN Storage with ASE

"101 ASE Traceflags"

ASE supports a large number of traceflags that modify server behavior, yet documentation on even those traceflags intended for customer use is scattered or nonexistent. This presentation will discuss how traceflags work in general (and why they don't actually work as users expect - for instance dbcc traceon is commonly assumed to be session-specific, but is not), some common problems encountered using traceflags, and changes in traceflag functionality in 12.4 and 15.1 - in particular the new SET SWITCH command, truly session-specific traceflags and mnemonic traceflags. The bulk of the presentation consists of detailed discussions and risk assessments of a number of flags intended for customer use.
