Data Management Trends 2008: Challenges - Opportunities

Date: Thursday 3rd April
Time: Morning
Venue: Founders' Hall, London
Presenters: See below

The enterprise data explosion is a fact of life.

A University of California study suggests that 1.5 billion terabytes of new information are created each year, and the lowest estimates translate this into a 30 percent annual growth in new stored data for each business.
Causes abound. One obvious factor is ever-expanding use of the Internet and internal networks, which share information by duplicating it. Another major contributor is financial transparency legislation that require organizations to report on multiple years of data. In nearly every industry, CRM and other customized marketing efforts generate volumes of purchasing-history and personal data.

The explosion of stored data is accompanied by business intelligence trends that examine longer-term data and require that data to be stored online, not off of tapes.

As a result, enterprises face three critical data management challenges:

1. Control costs and improve performance as data volume escalates.
2. Reduce operational risk in the face of growing complexity.
3. Exploit today's technology while laying a strong foundation for the future.

AGENDA

09:00 Data Management Trends 2008 - Opportunities & Challenges
Philip Howard, Research Director, Bloor Research

The task of managing data is changing with the growing volume of information, demands for tighter regulation, greater dependence on information systems, and the limits of today's data centers and IT budgets. IT managers are facing significant challenges, but opportunities exist for those with the insight necessary to find their way through.

10:15 Sybase - A Tradition of Data Innovation
David Jonker, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Sybase Inc.

Addressing the data management needs of 2008 and beyond requires enterprises to move away from the traditional approach of managing data and to embrace a strategy of best-in-class data management. Discover how Sybase has spent the last decade building a portfolio of databases optimized for specific uses and environments.

10:45 Refreshment Break

11:00 Solving Data Center Challenges with "Less is More" Thinking
Peter Thawley, Senior Director/Architect, Sybase Inc.

Many of today's IT departments face a dilemma. Business groups are demanding ever higher service levels, which often requires hardware and data center expansion. At the same time, IT departments are reaching the limits of physical space and stretched IT budgets. Discover how enterprises are doing "more with less" by using the right database technologies for OLTP systems.

11:30 Building an IT Safe for your Information Jewels
         Jeff Pryslak, Senior Solutions Manager

Losing data can be costly, interrupting operations, tarnishing reputations, and even litigation. Recent events reveal the many different ways data can be lost, including hackers, natural and IT disasters, and even rogue employees. Learn how enterprises can protect the enterprise's information jewels while minimizing the impact on system performance.
12:00 Ensuring non-stop operation in a stop and go world
David Jonker, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Sybase Inc.
IT systems are the information pulse of enterprises and the impact of downtime can be enormous for the business groups depending on them. Yet 100% uptime of any one server is never a reality. Systems go and eventually systems stop. However, enterprises that architect for a stop and go world can ensure there is always an information pulse.

TechSelect* 2006 and UKSUG AGM

Date: Tuesday 7 November
Venue: CBI Conference Centre, London

TechSelect* 2006, the highlight of the user group calendar, was once again a two track event catering for members of both UKSUG and STUN.

'Welcome' from UKSUG & STUN

Sybase Performance Update & Roadmap
Simon Cattlin, UK Regional Director, Sybase (UK) Ltd

Archive Database Access
Graham Ivey, Senior Staff Engineer, Sybase (UK) Ltd (TBC)

ASE 12.5.4 has a new infrastructure that enables a non tape archive device to be represented as a normal database. The load of an archive database is much faster than the traditional load of a normal database due to the fact that Backup Server does not need to copy pages. The storage for an archive database is mainly the dump itself and only a minimal amount of traditional disk space is needed when ASE allocates and modifies pages as part of recovery. An archive database can be used for a variety of operations including object-level restore, database consistency checking and load sequence verification.

Best Practices in Using SAN Storage with ASE
Peter Thawley, Senior Director & Architect, Sybase ITSG Engineering

Storage Area Networks (SANs) are fast becoming the prevelant media for database storage. However, there is still significant complexity and uncertainty in understanding how to best configure and manage SANs in database-centric environments. This session seeks to answer many of the practical questions of how to best utilitize SANs with ASE.

Using Rep Server Monitor Counters for Analysis &Tuning
Irfan Khan, Director of Global Evangelism, Sybase Engineering

This session takes a detailed look into one of the least understood features of Replication Server - yet the feature critical to proper tuning and performance analysis: RS Monitor Counters.

The presentation will identify the common counters for each of the modules that will help in tuning recommendations, show examples of using the counters for both tuning and problem determination. Example topics include:

  • How to interpret M&C data
  • RepAgent tuning and common issues
  • DSI tuning
  • memory tuning - in particular SQT cache sizing
  • problem/latency determination using M&C

Focus will be on RS 12.6 with changes in RS 15.0 discussed

"101 ASE Traceflags"

Date:
26 October 2006
Presenter: Bret Halford, Principal Product Support Engineer, Sybase, Inc.

ASE supports a large number of traceflags that modify server behavior, yet documentation on even those traceflags intended for customer use is scattered or nonexistent. This presentation will discuss how traceflags work in general (and why they don't actually work as users expect - for instance dbcc traceon is commonly assumed to be session-specific, but is not), some common problems encountered using traceflags, and changes in traceflag functionality in 12.4 and 15.1 - in particular the new SET SWITCH command, truly session-specific traceflags and mnemonic traceflags. The bulk of the presentation consists of detailed discussions and risk assessments of a number of flags intended for customer use.
